-At Christmas, Granddaddy helped Santa with the toys. Grandma cooked and
baked and cleaned and fixed and decorated and wrapped. She also took care of the other presents we got. You know. The kind you
really don't want as a kid. The kind you shake and nothing moves, and you
know immediately, it's just clothes. Grandma always gave us clothes. Not just any clothes. Each Christmas,
Grandma gave each of her grandchildren a box of brand-new socks and
underwear. -For instance, sometimes for lunch on weekends I have a personal size frozen
pizza that's heated in the microwave. When it's hot, I cut it into slices
with a pair of scissors. One day the grandkids walk in when I was doing
this. That Christmas the little tykes gave me something I'd never bought
for myself - a pizza cutter. I suppose it might have cost five bucks. Another example - my father recently added a bathroom to the family
homestead and while he was at it had some of the stuff in the old bathroom
"updated". So one of the things he has is a "water saving" showerhead - the
kind that puts out a drizzle of water and leaves you (or at any rate, me)
feeling frustrated rather than refreshed. This year I got him two of the
best water saving showerheads I know about (you can see a write up at
http://www.core77.com/contraption/apr_98/ and no, I have no financial
interest of any sort in this company or any retailer of its products) that
use no more than 2.5 gallons a minute and yet somehow manage to put out a
knock you over blast of water for around seven bucks apiece. One brother gave me one of those hot pads you put a cup of coffee on to keep
it hot to use at the office. I don't know why I never got one for myself.
Another gave me a bottle of gen-u-wine 100% maple syrup from a place the
whole family used to go during sugaring season for a New England supper with
sugar-on-snow for dessert. My sister gave me a book of Jane Austin's works
because a few years ago we were watching Pride and Prejudice on public tv
and I remarked that I'd like to read it someday and I never have. I went all out for one brother this year, a jogger, bought him a cd-player
to use while jogging, and made a cd of some of my favorites tunes with a
good rythmic beat to get him going. Total cost was under $30 bucks. |
