Each year, I make up a bunch of cross-stitched Christmas decorations
for my family, and for my in-laws, as well as exchanging other gifts.
These are all sent "home" for Christmas by mail, as we live too far
away to visit. For the past while, one of my brothers has been dating a young Swedish
lady. I would like to send her a small gift, not necessarily an
ornament, but nothing so lavish as to make her uncomfortable, as I
don't think she will be able to reciprocate. Is there a traditional
Swedish type of needlework? I've heard of huck weaving (which I think
is Swedish ?), but am almost sure that I couldn't purchase the
appropriate fabric here, and wouldn't know what to make with it
anyways. Perhaps there are traditional symbols used in Sweden for the
holidays that would be different from North American? I'm sort of at
a loss, I'm afraid, but thought she might like something to remind her
of home (I believe she intends to settle in Canada permanently). |

-I haven't seen any patterns but I know you can order Huck fabric from
Nordic Needle. It comes in White and Ivory, is 55" wide and you can
order by the inch or the yard. My Grandma came from Sweden and taught
me huck weaving when I was very young, so it is Scandinavian if not
Swedish. That was so long ago, that I don't remember much except
that the colors were very bright. - Try Thumbelina Needleworks - I think you can find
them thru Huffmans Distributing Co Home Page on the WWW. Also check out
Nordic Needle to see if Nordic is synonomous with Scandinavian.
Thumbelina carries some Danish designs and may at least be able to help
you locate something if they don't have anything. General Scandinavian
Christmas symbols are hearts. Also the Swedes celebrate Santa Lucia Day
around Christmas and Santa Lucia Brides are a typical symbol of the
season (A blonde girl in a long flowing white dress with a wreath of
candles in her hair - would make a perfect angel) Little elves dressed in
grey or grey/red combinations are also around at Christmas time, along
with gingerbread cookies in heartshapes. Swedish colors are blue (appr
dmc 826 and yellow appr dmc 297) |
