I don't know about your geographic area, but in mine, we have some of
the most amazingly redneck Christmas decorations that spotting them has
become a sport for DH and me. So many things look like they were just
thrown off the roof onto the bushes or trees. Is it just me getting
even more crochety, or have holiday decorations gone wild in the last
few years? |

-The ones that irk me most lately are the... I don't know if they're
wicker, or a plastic framework, or what... anyway, *things* shaped
like reindeer or Santas or whatever, and covered in lights. They look
inoffensive enough at night, when they're lit, but they're really
tacky by daylight (as indeed are most outdoor decorations IMO). -Saw some outrageous redneck displays yesterday; wasn't seeking them
out, but saw them along the road on the way to a hike. One front yard
had two inflatables I hadn't seen before, a huge Scooby Doo, and an
enormous Homer Simpson in a Santa outfit; the top of Homer's hat was
taller than the bottom of the roof. Several homes/yards had over half
the surface area covered with decorations. At least two redneck homes
still had their Halloween decorations up. On the same road, a huge
religious compound is being built; the structure is in the shape of a
cross. Yesterday I noticed the bad neighbors next door has their
manger scene figures (one of them a Santa) tied up with a rope,
probably to prevent them from being blown down by wind; it looks like
Joseph and Mary are being hanged. -I've seen some funny sights in Sydney. One house we pass puts out a tacky
Santa sleigh on polystyrene snow - in temperatures so high that he's likely
to be consumed in a bushfire. There he stands, surrounded by gum trees and
flowering jacaranda. His owners seem gloriously oblivious to the
incongruity. Talking of Santas, what's with those almost life-sized automaton ones that
wiggle their bottoms seductively like something from a porn show? Is Santa
looking to get mounted or what? I never saw them in England, but they're all
over the shops in Australia. |
