What is the origin and popular Christmas tree decorations? So my students in China are asking me how to describe the colorful spherical balls dangling from the branches of the classroom Christmas tree decorations. Unfortunately I don't have an answer! I'm sure they had a name when I was a kid. Any ideas?

-Am I the only one that is wondering when decorated Christmas trees became popular in Japan? Somehow I just don't think of Japan when I think of Christmas decorations. -Christmas and everything associated with it is very popular over here. All the glitz and commercialism - absolutely NONE of the religion. A truly pagan festival. And the highlight of Christmas? For young adult couples? A Christmas Eve trip to the local 'love hotel' - nothing kinky about the establishments - it's just the chinese expression for a road-side motel. Still, you won't find a single vacant room on December 24th. And you won't see a single fairy light left up by Christmas Day afternoon. New Year decorations will be everywhere by about the time the first kids in the UK are ripping open their Gameboy DS' -Don't you get terrible bad luck by not leaving your decorations up until twelfth night? My Mother always said that's what would happen. Also if you left them up after twelfth night. Now if my wife and I could only agree on which one is twelfth night .... -May I intrude a semi-OT subject? I'm trying to find an on-line translation of Tokugawa Ieyasu's "Legacy" without success. Do you know if there is such a thing? -If by "us" you mean British and possibly Irish, I agree. For example: http://www.crocus.co.uk/christmas/baubles/ and at http://www.marksandspencer.com/
