Popular Christmas gifts ideas for a fifth-grade boy?

I am Secret Santa to a fifth grade boy. I don't know anything about his hobbies or interests. Does anyone have any ideas for popular Christmas gifts? I'd like to spend around twenty-five dollars. I think it would be more fun to have two or three smaller presents to unwrap rather than one big one. I think I'll get a classic board game -- checkers, Monopoly, Clue -- as part of the gift. Many kids don't have the classics these days; also, he has a large family and his brothers and sisters could enjoy the game as well. I'd love to get a Spirograph if I can find one. In addition to the main gift, I'm going to put together a stocking with cards, slipper socks, a toothbrush, etc. Are Legos or K'Nex too young for a fifth grader?

If it's not a video game, there's not a lot of kids that'd be interested these days. Lego is good. The current BIONICLE concept seems to be very popular, and there are more advanced versions of Lego that are suitable for a kid in this age bracket. Only problem with Lego is it can be expensive. You might find out, if you can, if the boy is into things like sports, or perhaps action figures. There's a wide variety of both to choose from. A good football or soccer ball might go over well in the case of the former, and action figures such as Star Wars, G.I.Joe, Masters of the Universe, or Gundam might work well in the latter case.
