I'm trying to find Christmas presents for my parents (who are cantonese
speaking Chinese americans) and I was wondering if the following would make
good presents: "To Live" with Gong Lei(?) "Rumble in the Bronx" with Jackie Chan
"Supercop" with Jackie Chan and a bunch of others....... I think they would prefer cantonese language films with english subtitles. One thing that makes it problematic is that most of the chinese videos I see
in stores are unrated and it is difficult for me to choose from them. I
don't want to accidentally give my parents a pornographic video or something
with lots of explicit scenes or is too violent....... |

-It depends on what they like. Some parents only like drama stories
and others like what is popular with most audiences. Some like
Stephen Chao comedies while others think he needs therapy. : I think they would prefer cantonese language films with english subtitles. Most if not all HK films from HK are in Cantonese. But HK films from
Taiwan will probably be in Mandarin. Check with the store first
because some stores will carry both.
I guess "Sex and Zen" is probably not on the gift list. The
Chinese videos from Hong Kong are rated but in a different rating
system. Even without the ratings this is probably not a problem if
they are Chinese who have seen HK movies before. Just don't get any
videos with scantilly-clad women on the cover. -filmed in the PRC, the dialogue is in Mandarin. If you get
an American-release copy, it'll be Mandarin with English
subtitles. If you get a Taiwanese release, it'll likewise
probably be in Mandarin. A Hong Kongese release will most
likely be in Cantonese. But even if it's in Mandarin, it'll
be subtitled in Chinese as well as English (I assume Taiwanese
releases also include Chinese subtitles, but don't know for
sure. I have a friend whose parents are from Taipei, and they
have enjoyed a number of Hong Kong films precisely because
of the Chinese subtitles, even though they don't understand
Cantonese. |
