Are Large decorations for Christmas important?

I am a religious Jew who deeply bemoans the absence of Christmas decorations (or menorahs in windows) in large parts of my city, Los Angeles. My city and I are the poorer for it. Life is greatly enhanced for Americans of all faiths by people who take the time and pay the expense to put up Christmas displays. Do some people put up displays so lavish that the purpose is partly to outdo their neighbor? Probably. But so what? The rest of us benefit from such competitions.

- i'm an atheist who firmly believes that Christian fundamentalism is destroying this country. But I love Christmas decorations on light poles, wreaths, candles in windows, carolers... it makes me feel better, gotta love the spirt of the season. I don't even consider it a religious holiday unless you worship Sam Walton. My brother brought a jewish chick he was dating to Christmas a couple of years back, & i asked her in all seriousness if she celebrated it -- why not? It's a great holiday, no matter your beliefs. -In the end, however, the holidays at the end of the year really have little to do with any religious celebration. Sure, the religious groups make an attempt to hijack the holidays for their own purposes, but ultimately it is only propaganda that is intended to get people in church so that they'll drop some money in the plate. It is nice having some days off from work to wind down in preparation for another year, but it really is only just a holiday season and it benefits retailers more then anyone else.
