I love reading this website and was hoping I could tap into some of
your brilliant ideas I work with a group of Rainbows (the group smaller than Brownies) aged 5
and 6. We have 18 in the group and would love to help kids make some
easy Christmas decorations this year. Can anyone help me find some
quick, cheap and cheerful ideas for them to try? |

-I did all the crafts for our Sunday evening kids group for 7 years. We had
kids kindergarten through 5th grade. I've left out the harder Christmas
crafts... but here are some that worked with all the kids.. Cinnamon/Apple Sauce Ornaments...
Equal parts cinnamon (buy at Costco or other large warehouse store) with
applesauce. You can put this into individual plastic ziplock baggies and
gave the kids mush them about until it turns into dough. Then roll them out
on wax paper and cut them out with a cookie cutter. Remember to make a
ribbon hole at the top (a straw works well.) Let them dry for 24 hours.
They can then be decorated if you wish. Make sure they don't roll the dough
too thin or the ornaments will crack. Quick Jeweled Ornaments
Buy the satan or shiny one color glass Christmas ornaments. Use LOW TEMP
glue guns and glitter glue sticks (available at craft stores.) Kid's make a
drop of glitter then place a "jem" (bags of gems available in craft
stores/walmart) into the glue. The gem is ringed with glitter and sticks
to the glass ball. Swirled Paint Ornaments
Need Clear glass ornaments and two colors of craft paint. (White and Gold
look great together.)
Take metal top off of ornament and squeeze in a bit of white and a bit of
gold paint. Turn the glass ball around until the inside is coated. Turn
upside down (an egg carton works well) and let dry/drain.
After 24 hours replace metal top and tie with bow or add other greenery with
glue gun. Hand print wall hanging.
Use muslin (or similar cotton material) green and red craft paint and dowel. (Or cool stick from a tree)
On a cut piece of muslin sew pocket at top and bottom. Sides can be left
rough.
Kids can make green hand prints in a circle (for wreath) or in a tree shape
Add red "fingerprint" berries"
Date and name and "Merry Christmas" can be written with paint pens.
Peppermint Wreaths
Cut stiff cardboard into rings
Using LOW temp glue gun, glue wrapped round peppermint candies around the
ring. Add a ribbon EASY CHEAP Fast...
Get red, green and white pipe cleaners.
Twist together into candy cane shapes |
