Handmade Christmas Gifts and a little Update

I'm currently cultivating a better relationship with one of my two SILs. Helen, the one I am just starting to really get to know, (they have always lived far away from us & health problems in both families have made it very hard to get together) has just bought a house in FL. They are currently very house-poor. She values handmade gifts, she is the only one in her family who does except DH. I am making some handmade Christmas decorations, mostly stuffed attractive fabric ones. I did a few cross-stitch ones for her several years ago, much to my surprise she *framed them* & put them on the wall in her kitchen! The rest of her family, especially her sister, are not interested in a gift unless it cost $$$. (Big self- esteem problem & so stupid.) DH used to be that way, but then he hooked up with me, the "save-your-money, fool!" person & over the years he has come to really value my handmade contributions. My sewing has saved this family megabucks. I am also making several wardrobe items each for my 2 DDs. Life is never dull. Any idea?

I've found in my experience that sometimes even those who insist on big-bucks type gifts are okay with edible home-made gifts -- especially something you make very well that they don't. (*wicked grin*) I know several people who would sneer at anything home-made as a gift...except food. I've never understood that sort of thing, but...I don't understand a lot of things...hee-hee! This year I'm making a lot of candy and cookies, as usual, but also some interesting embroidered pillows. I do a lot of home-made gifts all the same in large batches, or as variations on a theme. One year I made several pretty nightgowns, and another year I made little velveteen evening bags with hand-made tassels. The evening bags were actually pretty inexpensive: a yard and a half of velveteen for about eleven dollars, a yard and a half of cotton to line them for five dollars, and less than five dollars for embroidery floss to make tassels. Each one only took about an hour or so to make. I'm glad someone asked this question, though, because I was looking for a few more ideas, too! EVERYBODY in my family is getting an angel ornament that is a quilt block. I have to practice this if I'm ever going to get any better at it. I made some pot pourri sachets from old lace hankies that I have bought at auction and dried peony petals from my garden. What else... my 16 year old has always wanted a Raggedy Ann & Andy doll so I found a pattern and will start that tomorrow. God, Its less than 2 months away.
