I'm trying to find Christmas presents for my parents (who are cantonese
speaking Chinese americans) and I was wondering if the following would make
good presents:
"To Live" with Gong Lei(?)
"Rumble in the Bronx" with Jackie Chan
"Supercop" with Jackie Chan
and a bunch of others.......
I think they would prefer cantonese language films with english subtitles.
One thing that makes it problematic is that most of the chinese videos I see
in stores are unrated and it is difficult for me to choose from them. I
don't want to accidentally give my parents a pornographic video or something
with lots of explicit scenes or is too violent.
Would "To Live" make a good christmas present? |

It depends on what they like. Some parents only like drama stories
and others like what is popular with most audiences. Some like
Stephen Chao (sp?) comedies while others think he needs therapy.
Most if not all HK films from HK are in Cantonese. But HK films from
Taiwan will probably be in Mandarin. Check with the store first
because some stores will carry both.

An indictment of Chinese feudalism? An ironic celebration of Maoism? A
complex, sometimes bloody tale of Chinese politics spanning decades?
Xmas present? I don't think so. I am not saying TO LIVE is anything less
than brilliant filmmaking. But it is not a "fun and laughter" kind of
film.
Too "energetic" for your parents, isn't it? Something like PROJECT A,
MIRACLES or Sammo Hung's MILLIONAIRE EXPRESS (aka SHANGHAI EXPRESS) has
a more charming storyline (save for some unnecesarily tasteless bit in
the beginning of EXPRESS) and less violent than the films you mentioned
above. |
