It must be traditional, wooden
Christmas decorations, hot mulled wine, cobbled streets etc etc.
I am wanting to visit a German Christmas market in December97. Can anyone
recommend one - there appears to be several |

Germany is pretty big, and just about every region has its own
Christmas market. All of 'em will have wooden Christmas decorations
and mulled wine, but the cobbled streets will depend on the city. The
Heidelberg market is also very popular, and is held in the historic
old city.
If you're going to be in the South, the Christkindlmarkt in Nuremburg
is very popular and very traditional, but also very crowded. In the
North, I recommend Lubeck (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The
Christmas market is held on the square behind the old historic
Rathaus.
I'm no expert on Christmas markets, but I've been to all of these and
had a fairly good time. I think you will have no difficulties in finding a Christmas market
which suits you. Even the market in Frankfurt has everything you
mentioned. But on weekends it's awfully crowded. Otherwise, if this is
to big try any smaller town. For example I know the market in Bruchköbel (very small town near Frankfurt), it has much atmosphere. It's located
in the old town with small streets and many "Fachwerkhäuser". To get
there take S8 to Hanau Haupfbahnhof and then take either train to
Bruchköbel (directon Friedberg) or Bus 2 or 7 to Freiheitsplatz and
there Bus 5 or 15 to Bruchköbel (Station: innerer Ring).
They have also a Christmas market in Hanau, you will see it when you are
at Freiheitsplatz. |
