Has anyone got any bright ideas?I have been given the supposedly simple task of decorating10 tables
for a Christmas Dinner with red candles and "flowers, or something".
The red candles are to stand in glass star shaped pots which I believe
are about 1.1/2 to 2" high. (these, I am told, are at the bottom of a
box and will be not be available until the day). As the function has suddenly started to cost more than anticipated I
have to do it as cheaply as possible (I know just the cost of the
candles will make them shudder!) but of course they want the
decorations to look expensive!! My first thought was a ring of Oasis or similar to encircle the candle
holder, with fresh bits of evergreen and red bits of ribbon on (I've
got suitable ribbon to put wires on.) but when I priced the Oasis
rings they were £1,40 each. Is there something else I could use? I'm sure there must be someone who's solved this problem (the
tablecloths are borrowed white linen ones so mustn't get stained). |

I made table decorations with a group of Guides using cheap red candles
from Ikea. Buy a large block of green oasis approx 12" x 6". Use a bread knife to
slice it into it into 2" thick slices. To mount the candles onto the slices of oasis tape cocktail sticks onto
the base of the candle so they produce 4 legs that can be pushed into
the oasis. Trim the oasis into shape using the bread knife. Use offcuts that are left behind when Christmas trees are trimmed to be
sold. For a bit of variety use ivy, holly, hebe pagei. Use florists
ribbon made into loops and tied with wire so that it can be pushed into
the oasis. Collect your cones on a walk in the countryside. Wire them so that they
can be pushed into the oasis. Use brazil or walnuts glue to wire. Wrap small pieces ( 1" square) of oasis in red or gold wrapping paper
and glue them in position. |
