When does everyone put up their Christmas/holiday decorations and how long do they stay up?

-We put ours up when we get our tree, around Dec. 15. We leave everything up until Jan. 6, the twelfth day of Christmas, otherwise known as Epiphany, Three Kings Day, or Twelfth Night, which tradition holds is the day that the Wise Men came to see baby Jesus. Everybody sings about the twelve days of Christmas, but how many people actually celebrate it anymore? (We don't give gifts to each other all twelve days, but we keep the tree up and listen to our Christmas music. It's fun.) We get a fresh-cut tree every year, so that's why we don't put stuff up right after Thanksgiving. Since it stays up until January 6, the tree would be mighty dry and might be a fire hazard if we put it up any earlier! -It definitely didn't feel like Christmas in the cold north when we bought our tree - it was 65degres, perfect sunny blue sky. Still warm as ever.... it did however feel just like Christmas usually feels in Southern California. Now, if only this weather would last until March! -We started putting up some decorations this weekend. We bought our Nativity set (I really love the one we went with) and put it out. We plan on going out next weekend to get the tree. I'm not sure how long it will stay up since this is our first Christmas together. An old roommate of mine always used to insist on getting a live tree, promising that she would water it and take it down after Christmas. She never did water it, and I was always the one to take it outside... usually around the beginning of February. You'd think that by our third year living together I would have learned. Here's an interesting side note: I heard a local news story recently that a town in NJ was considering a law that would restrict any holiday decorations. The soonest outdoor decorations (or decorations that can be seen from the outside) could go up would be 30 days before any holiday, and the latest thay could still be out is 20 days after tha holiday. I'm not sure if the law passed or not, but most people interviewed during the news story were against it. All I could think of is a friend of mine who is Russian Orthodox and celebrates Christmas in January. If she lived in that town would she be given an extension, or arrested? Also, what about people who put out "Halloween-type" decorations to decorate for Fall (like pumpkins and scarecrows) or "Eastery" decorations to decorate for Spring? What are the restrictions for seasonal decorations like that? And what about someone who wants to have a Christams in July party? Will they be jailed for decorating for their shin-dig? Just some food for thought.
