I made them. And oh do they smell great. I just wanted to say a few words to
the novices. Buy a LOT of cinnamon! I bought what was a big container of
cinnamon from Big Lots and it turns out that it was only half full (I later
looked and it's labeled 2 oz) and my same size McCormicks cinnamon is 4 oz. So
I had to break into the good stuff. :-) Plus I needed more than was required
because my dough was too sticky, plus you need some to "flour" the work surface
and rollling pin. Let's just say I had a little nightmare that was reminiscent
of my Christmas cookie experience (why I don't make them any more). Plus,
don't make them if you are very sensitive or allergic to strong smells. I was
getting pretty sick of the cinnamon smell myself. (and this is someone who
eats cinnamon sugar toast every morning!)
But they are very cute. I love the homemade country look. It goes great with
the strung up popcorn and cranberries .Any comment ? |

-We made these last Sunday night and the house still smells great! We made them
while sitting on the kitchen floor, rolling them out on one cookie sheet &
putting them on another to dry. Cleanup of the applesauce and cinnamon Chadley
smeared all over the floor took a while, but it was worth it. Luckily, I had
enough sense not to let her get a hold of the glue -Are you rolling or shaping them into certain shapes? Like what? Do you use
cookie cutters or are you sculpting? -I rolled mine out and used Christmas cookie cutters. Well, I had to buy cookie
cutters (didn't have any ever since the christmas cookie incident). So I made
christmas trees, gingerbread men and hearts. I don't think my dough would've
sculpted very well, and who has the time? This was all I could manage without
pullling my hair out! -Here it is again for everyone that missed it and still wants it.
Mix 1 cup cinnamon and 1 cup applesauce with 1 Tablespoon of white glue. You
want a consistency that can be rolled with a rolling pin but not quite as
sticky or it will stick to your counter! Sprinkle counter with cinnamon and
roll out dough and cut with cookie cutters. Cut a hole in shape with the
straw so you will be able to hang them. Let dry about 24 hours. They shrink
as they dry. Cut lengths of gold thread, make loops and hang. they will keep
their scent for a few years. Refresh scent with cinnamon fragrance oil. |
